Course Description
Marathon
Start time is 6:30 AM for the Marathon. This unique,
scenic alpine loop course starts out eastbound from the
Fieldhouse along Highland Drive. A quick right/left at
1.5 miles puts the runners through the gentle upgrade of
the Trailside residential area and past Trailside
school/park. At this point the runners will be merged
onto the paved bike path, and will make a left at
Highland Drive. Rolling downhill for approximately 1
mile, runners then turn right and through the first
tunnel of the course, which goes under the highway and
onto the quiet paved road which terminates at the
Historic Rail Trail. Runners then turn right and proceed
along the smooth gravel Rail Trail for approximately 7
miles of gentle upgrade (2%), past open grazing land
(yes, sometimes there are cows on the path) and beaver
ponds. There is one road crossing in this section,
manned by Utah Highway Patrol. The Rail Trail welcomes
the runners into Park City with paved/gravel pathways.
Upon crossing Bonanza Drive (traffic controlled by Park
City’s finest), runners will continue the upward trend
on the paved Poison Creek Trail (a remnant of our mining
history) through City Park. Look to your right for great
views of some 2002 Olympic ski runs. Traversing several
short tunnels (one painted with a mural depiction of
Park City’s mining heritage), the runners begin the top
loop section, running to the base of the Deer Valley
Resort, and the high point of the course. Upon reaching
the Snow Park Lodge, the course flattens before turning
downhill. Upon returning to the Poison Creek Trail, the
course then turns west and puts runners through a fun
section which has them running down the middle of an
open shopping mall, a pedestrian bridge over Main
Street, and across a skier bridge. A short, steep uphill
‘blip’ puts runners at the top of Empire Avenue and the
start of the mostly downhill cruise to the finish.
Runners will be on quiet city streets as they head past
the Park City Mountain Resort, and along the rolling
hills near the municipal golf course and headquarters
for the Sundance Film Festival and back onto a paved
bike path which takes runners to the historic McPolin
barn depicted on our logo and finisher t-shirts. Another
tunnel, some wood plank bridges over the pristine
wetlands of the Swaner Nature Reserve and a paved bike
path return to the Fieldhouse--it’s pretty enough to
(almost) want to do it again!
Half Marathon
The half marathon will start at 6:45 AM
following the same start as the marathon but quickly
turning toward town (south) along a paved bike path.
This out-and-back design takes runners on the last six
miles of the Marathon course, from the Fieldhouse south
towards Park City on paved and smooth gravel bike paths
adjacent to the Swaner Nature Preserve, with numerous
wood plank bridges over creeks and wetlands. The course
goes through a tunnel and past the McPolin barn shown on
our logo and finisher t-shirts, and continues on a
gentle uphill trend through quiet residential areas. The
turn around point is near Rotary Park, with an aid
station manned by the Sundance Institute (not sure if
Robert Redford will actually be in attendance though).
Triple Trail Challenge
For the hard-core trail running enthusiast, this
three-part stage race incorporates the Jupiter Peak
Steeplechase on August 9, the Park City Half Marathon on
August 23, and the Mid Mountain Marathon on September 6.
Last year 67 runners completed the Challenge! This
sub-category of runners will be participating in the
Park City Half Marathon the same as all half marathon
entrants (same start time, course and finish chute). If
you would like to participate in the Triple Trail
Challenge, please go to
www.mountaintrails.org for
registration through
www.runnercard.com. Online registration
for the TTC ends August 9 at the Steeplechase (there
will be a registration table set up prior to the race).
Directions and Parking
From the Salt Lake Valley, take I-80 Eastbound up
Parley’s Canyon (signs show Cheyenne). At the Park City
exit 145 (Hwy 224) at Kimball Junction, turn right and
then quick left at the first traffic light (opposite
McDonald’s). Follow this street for approximately 1/3
mile and look for event parking signs. The Fieldhouse is
a large contemporary building, painted khaki green.
There is ample parking located around the Fieldhouse.
Overnight guests staying at the
Newpark Hotel may simply
leave their cars and walk to the start/finish area. View
map of the Start/Finish area.
Weather
Late August in Park City brings cooler temperatures, and
the first signs of fall: bright spots of color from the
maple and aspen trees. Although mountain weather is
infinitely variable, early morning on race day will
probably be somewhat cool to start. Rain is very
unlikely. Low humidity in combination with an altitude
of 7,000 feet necessitates especially good hydration. If
you are unused to either of these conditions, please
consult a training reference for hydration tips. Better
yet, come a day or two early and enjoy the beautiful
surroundings as you acclimatize!
The average low (nighttime) temperature in August is 50
degrees.
The average high (daytime) temperature in August is 80
degrees.

Aid
Stations and Clothing Drops
Marathon
On the Marathon Course aid stations with water, Gatorade
and runner supplies will be available at the following
mileages: 2.4, 4.3, 6.2, 8.6, 10.4, 12.4, 13.2, 15.2,
16.8, 18.5, 20, 21.5, 23.1, 24.5. Hammer Gel energy
packets (chocolate, vanilla and raspberry) will also be
available at mile 10.5, 15.2/16.8 (same location), and
20 mile aid stations. There will be a clothing drop at
the first aid station near Trailside school (mile 2.5).
Please mark the clothing with your race number and we
will do our best to get the items back to you at the
"clothing corral" at the finish line. Portable toilets
will be available throughout, and look for additional
flush toilets in Trailside Park (mile 2.5) City Park
(mile 14) Rotary Park (mile 19) and at the McPolin barn
(mile 21). Food, drinks, and massages will be available
at the finish of the race.
Half Marathon
The half marathon course will have seven aid stations
with water, toilets and Gatorade at each. At the turn
around aid station (Rotary Park) at mile 6, there will
also be Hammer Gel packets available. There will be a
clothing drop at all first aid stations, and runners may
reclaim their dropped items at the clothing corral at
the Fieldhouse after 9:30 AM. Please mark your clothing
with your race number (on a piece of masking tape) so we
can more easily find your items for you. You may also
deposit items prior to race start at the clothing corral
inside the Fieldhouse.
Bands
We will be providing musical entertainment for runners
on the course and at the finish line. Stay tuned for
more information...
Limitations
Our primary concern is the safety of our participants.
All marathoners must complete the course in a maximum of
6-1/2 hours (1:00 PM). Utah Road Runners reserves the
right to remove participants from the course if they
will not finish prior to the cutoff time. In the event
of a high-temperature day, or other weather related
issues, the cutoff time may be adjusted. Since much of
the course is on eight foot wide gravel paths, no dogs
(even on leash), baby strollers, bicycles, roller-blades
or similar devices will be permitted during the race.
Private support is also not allowed. The use of the
above prohibitions will result in a disqualification.
The course will not be closed to traffic. Runners must
obey all traffic rules and regulations and will be
subjected to the same traffic rules as other
pedestrians. MP3 players are permitted.
Walkers
Each year, some participants plan on walking the
marathon. If you choose to do this, we would recommend
that you begin early, in order to finish with support.
If you do decide to start early, you MUST CHECK IN with
a race official before you start, so that your bib
number will be noted as an early start. You will have an
unofficial time, but you will receive a finisher's medal
and t-shirt. Please understand that you will not have
support at aid stations until after the official race
time of 6:30 a.m., and thus you should set out with an
understanding of the course IN THE DARK. Please bring a
headlamp and water.
Awards
Marathon finishers will receive a unique
glass suncatcher finisher’s medal created just for us by
Australian artist Morag Totten (new design for 2008), as
well as a wicking fabric t-shirt in men’s and women’s
cuts. Half Marathon finishers will receive a smaller
Morag Totten medal and a wicking fabric t-shirt in men’s
and women’s sizing.
Marathon:
All finishers will receive a unique glass suncatcher
medal. Original hand-made pieces of art will also be
given to the top first, second, and third overall male
and female winners. Additionally, the first three
finishers in each age division will receive an award.
Half Marathon: All finishers will
receive a unique glass suncatcher medal. Hand-made
pieces of art will also be given to the top first,
second, and third overall male and female winners.
The awards ceremonies will be held at Newpark Fieldhouse.
The half marathon awards ceremony will take place at
approximately 9 a.m. The marathon awards ceremony will
begin at approximately 11 a.m. You must be present to
receive your award. No awards will be given out prior to
the ceremony nor mailed out afterward.

the race. We will take these marked clothes, put them in
a plastic bag for you with your bib number and return to
the clothing corral at the Fieldhouse. Your clothes must
be marked in order for us to do this!
Massages
Post-marathon massages will be available to participants
within the finish area. This free service is provided by
the great massage therapists at Knead a Massage.

Showers
The Fieldhouse has locker rooms and showers available to
runners for $2.00.
Volunteers
If you have friends or family who are interested in
volunteering, please have them complete a volunteer
registration form. Volunteers receive a T-shirt and sack
breakfast, and plenty of praise from the runners as they
pass by. Come be part of a great crew of people!
Sponsorship
Marathon sponsorship opportunities are available. Vendor
booths will be set up at the Fieldhouse on Friday
evening and throughout Saturday. Please contact us if
you are interested in sponsoring our event, or having
booth space.
Spectators
Spectators can best view the marathon from the Town Lift
Plaza, in Old Town Park City. This is where runners will
cross the skier bridge at Mile 17.5. The Town Lift Plaza
is located at approximately 800 Park Avenue. Just look
for the only bridge over Park Avenue. Other good viewing
places are shown on the course map.
